Watershed Threats: Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee, SC

Many challenges are being faced every day in the wetlands.  The human population is exploding at an alarming rate and many are moving into the Socastee/Myrtle Beach region.  I spoke with a realtor, and she advised me that 55 families are moving into the region.  Many houses are being built in areas that need to have green space for biodiversity and flood control.

The beautiful Intracoastal Waterway needs to be preserved.

Some things that I have seen that are threats to the waterway are:

  1. water pollution
  2. water traffic
  3. the trash in the waterway
  4. increase of phytoplankton
  5. flooding
  6. loss of biodiversity along the waterway
  7. soil erosion
  8. human population building on the waterway
  9. deforestation
